Fair Play

Democracy is enlightenment, it’s freedom; it’s the only way forward - isn’t it? Futures will explore the darker side of democracy as part of Battersea Arts Centre’s 2009 Scratch Festival with a scratch performance of Fair Play.

Fair Play – A corner stone of British democracy, a founding principle of the Olympic movement and still true for 2012, no hidden nastiness for these games it wouldn’t be British. An increase in sex trafficking, it won’t happen...or will it?

Since meeting representatives working with trafficked women we want to explore the high moral ground the west regularly takes on democracy. It is anticipated that there will be increased demand for sexual services around the 2012 Olympics. An increase in sex trafficking in response to this is anticipated.

Come to Great Britain where there is democracy for all, freedom of speech, human rights honoured, a place to feel safe, a new life awaits unless you are a trafficked child, young women coerced into the sex industry or man/women used for slave labour to boost profits. Slavery is dead long live human trafficking - is it worth destroying a thriving commercial entertainments industry and cheap labour for sake of democracy?

Futures performed a scratch performance entitled 'Fair Play' as part of the Battersea Arts Centre's scratch festival in September 2009, which explored theses issues and enabled the company to begin developing ideas for a play.
